Deep Dive: Research Data Publication Ethics

As the number and breadth of public datasets has grown so has the number and range of ethics and integrity issues associated with open datasets. Standards exist for journal publications, but have not been in place for data publication specifically, or in frameworks that directly involved data repositories. To respond to these emerging challenges, the FORCE11 Research Data Publishing Ethics Working Group, in collaboration with COPE, has been developing guidelines and resources to support journal editors, data repositories and institutions in the handling of ethics cases related to open research data.

In this session, we will present the resources the Working Group has developed, discuss experiences with ethics cases related to research data publication, and propose how the resources can support different stakeholders in the handling of such issues. We will also encourage feedback from the audience on their own experience with cases involving research data and on their views on resource needs across diverse stakeholders, to inform the Working Group's next steps.

Session Agenda:
Working group co-chairs Iratxe Puebla and Daniella Lowenberg will facilitate a deep dive into the background of research data publishing ethics, resources created by the WG, and open questions ahead for the community to tackle. Members of the WG will join for a panel discussion and open Q&A:
Speaker: Renee Hoch, Senior Editor, Team Manager, PLOS Publication Ethics
Speaker: Joerg Heber, Research Integrity Officer, Lawrence Berkeley National Lab
Speaker: Amber Osman, Regional Ambassador, Open Science, Avoin GLAM/Creative Commons Finland
